Chapter 14
Faye
Sitting in front of my vanity mirror, I cup my hands around my face and moan. My weave is really showing out today. The devil is a liar. I’m going to get my hair to act right or else. I really do need to come out of this weave. I’ve been wearing a weave since high school. I’d love to wear my own hair, but I’ve never had much to work with. Seems like when God decided to give me dimples, he held back on the hair. I’d love to have a head full of frilly red hair like Sabrina had or long locks like Sheridan or even thick curls like Vicky. Even Danielle has a thick luxurious mane. That was before she decided to cut it all off. I, on the other hand, have been a chicken head from day one. Mark has asked me to come out of my weave, and I think before the year’s out, I am. I need to get real on the inside and the outside.
Speaking of which, I really need to come clean with Sheridan. I felt like such a hypocrite yesterday spending time with her knowing I had slept with Gary and carried his child. But Mark says some things are better left unsaid, especially if they can hurt another person. But how can Sheridan and I really move forward with a relationship knowing what I did? It was such a long time ago. I don’t see her not forgiving me…but then again, maybe I should keep it to myself. We’re already dealing with what happened that night. Mark has forgiven me and he doesn’t even want to know who I was pregnant by. Thank God for that, because it seems like he and Gary really hit it off last night. “Lord, what is the right thing to do?”
“The right thing to do about what?” Mark asks, entering.
“Hi, babe.”
“You okay?” he asks, standing behind me.
“I’m alright.”
“What right thing are you trying to do?’
“Nothing…nothing…I’m just struggling with this dang weave.”
“The right thing to do would be to wear your own hair.”
“I am, sweetie. I plan to soon,” I say, brushing my hair into a boring, but acceptable style.
“Where are you off to?” Mark asks.
“Sheridan and I are having a spa day.”
“Nice. I really like Gary. Seems like a nice guy. So you all went to the same high school?”
“Yeah…that’s right.”
“Boy, he was something else on the field back in the day. Good-looking guy, strong.”
“Right…uh…what are you doing today?”
“I have a meeting with New Hope’s social media team. I want to start seeing how we can incorporate Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram into the worship service.”
“Sounds good, sweetie. I better head out,” I say, needing to clear my head. I stand and face him.
“Okay, baby. Be good,” he says, pulling me in close. “What time is your appointment? You sure you don’t have time for a quickie?” he asks.
“Lord Jesus, man you are so nasty,” I say, pulling myself out of his arms.
“No, I just happen to have a sexy wife and we are trying to get pregnant.
